This antebellum residence survived
the siege of Petersburg
during the Civil War and was later enlarged by railway tycoon Alexander
Hamilton.
During World War I, the mansion
served as an officer’s club for the nearby Camp Lee
military base and was the residence of General Pershing.
Later, it was home to the family of Hollywood
star Joseph Cotten, Orson Wells’ alter ego
(Gaslight, Duel in the Sun, The Third Man, Citizen Kane), born and
buried in Petersburg.
